STUDIO
WHDA are a design and architecture practice in Melbourne led by Redmond Hamlett and Douglas Wan with a primary focus on community and residential architecture.
We play our part in the enduring project of contextual modernism; to harness rationalist design rigour for humanist needs. To this end we layer design responses from environment, culture and local histories with the aim of producing engaging architecture with a strong identity.
We are experienced in a wide range of projects including educational, community, residential and commercial buildings. We provide a full range of architectural services for client groups including community engagement processes for community organisations and institutions that are building educational and other community facilities in Victoria.
Team
Redmond Hamlett
Director - Project Director
M Arch, B.A (Arch)(Hons)
Founding director Redmond is interested in engaging with the Australian cultural milieu and the crossover into the urban realm. He sees the focus on working with, and empowering, community groups as an important area of architectural practice. Redmond is an experienced practitioner and Examiner with the Architects Registration Board of Victoria. He is actively involved with architectural education with Deakin University and the Melbourne School of Design in the areas of professional practice, construction technology and urban design either as a guest lecturer or sessional academic.
Douglas Wan
Director - Design Architect
M Arch, B Env (Arch)
Douglas joined the practice in 2018 as a Design Architect, having worked across scales on large public and multi-residential projects that intersect urbanism and architecture. He advocates for an architecture that blends opposites, the understanding that culture is anything but neatly bounded, and the belief that sustainability works best as catharsis.
Daniel Out
Project Architect
M Arch, B Design (Arch)
Daniel brings a passion for industrial heritage pasts and passive technological futures to the practice, and has developed a keen eye for clarity, communication, and creativity in documentation. With a personal background in social housing and over ten years experience in the commercial & multi- residential sector, Daniel contributes a diverse technical skill set to WHDA`s capacity for project delivery.
